Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches have been packed in lunch boxes more than any other type of sandwich. For a long time, peanut butter didn’t have the competition it does today. With almonds being one of the most popular nuts on the market, it’s no surprise that almond butter is one of the most popular types of nut butter available today. Almond butter can be used in the same manner as peanut butter. However, an AB&J sandwich seems to be a more sophisticated option for adults than a traditional PB&J.
When compared to each other, there are a few nutritional differences between almond butter and peanut butter. Both are a good source of non-animal protein and a good source of vitamin E. One of the biggest nutritional differences in these two types of nut butter is in their fiber content. Almond butter has almost twice as much fiber as peanut butter. Fiber contributes to a person’s overall health, their digestive system and is beneficial in managing diabetes and cholesterol. Fiber also contributes to satiety which helps prevent over-eating or frequent snacking. Almond butter contains more of what is known as healthy fats and less saturated fats than peanut butter. An equal size serving of almond butter has about half the amount of sugar as peanut butter. There’s a higher amount of magnesium, potassium and calcium in almond butter. Both almond butter and peanut butter have some health and nutritional benefits. They can be incorporated in most diet plans when consumed in moderation.
Most of us are accustomed to storing peanut butter in a kitchen cabinet or on a shelf in the pantry. However, homemade or organic nut butter should be stored in the refrigerator. A jar of nut butter that has been opened has a shelf life of approximately 2 months. Storing nut butter in the refrigerator can double its shelf-life. Storing nut butter in the refrigerator will also help prevent the oil separation that occurs when nut butter is stored at room temperature.
Both almond butter and peanut butter provide nutritional benefits. They are a convenient snack option and can be a quick-fix meal for children and adults. They can be incorporated into all types of recipes for a boost of flavor and nutrition. However, almond butter is more expensive than peanut butter. If you’re shopping on a tight budget, you might want to consider almond butter an occasional treat while eating and using peanut butter on a more frequent basis.
