There are some similarities and differences between these two types of dates. Dried dates and fresh dates are used in different ways, yet both provide significant health benefits.
Dried dates have less moisture content than fresh dates which enhances their sweetness. Dehydrated dates retain their flavor longer than fresh dates. They also have a longer shelf life. Fresh dates are moist and have a honey-like flavor. Dry dates have a chewy texture and a caramel-like flavor. Dehydrated dates are used in cooking and baking in their dried state or rehydrated to accommodate recipe requirements.
It’s important to consider how you plan to incorporate dates into your diet before buying them. Medjool dates are larger than Deglet Noor dates. They have thicker skin, a softer texture, and a sweeter flavor. A Deglet Noor date is medium-sized with a semi-soft texture and slightly nutty flavor. Both types of dates have numerous health benefits including supporting heart health, boosting immunity, preventing anemia, and supporting skin and hair health. The Deglet Noor type of date contains glucose, fructose, and sucrose whereas the Medjool type of date contains a higher amount of fructose but almost no sucrose.
Fresh dates can be found in the produce section of the grocery store. Fresh dates have a low glycemic index which lessens the possibility of them causing a spike in blood sugar levels. However, diabetics can eat dehydrated dates in moderation. Fresh dates are more diet-friendly than dates that have been dehydrated. Once again, as with a diabetic diet, moderation is the key to including dates in a weight loss diet. Buying pitted dates is a big time-saver. Purchasing pitted dates in bulk is an economical and convenient way to stock up on this healthy, sweet fruit. Another time-saving option is to buy chopped dry dates to use in baking or in homemade snack mixes. Dates can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 6 months or in the freezer for up to one year.
