That very distinct flavor is achieved when barley grains are allowed to germinate. Once that process is complete, the malted barley is dried and ground into a powder. Other dry ingredients are added to create malted milk powder. Malted milk powder is readily available in most grocery stores and online. The availability of malted milk powder makes it easy for anyone to purchase it and the other necessary ingredient to prepare homemade chocolate malt balls.
You can satisfy a yearning for this old-fashion candy or quell a specific craving for these unique treats by making a batch at home. The ingredient list is incredibly short. All you need is white chocolate, malted milk powder and milk chocolate. Using a double boiler or a microwave, melt ½ pound of white chocolate. Add about ½ cup of malted milk powder to the melted chocolate and stir. Add more powder, if needed, until the mixture has the consistency needed to form ½ inch balls. Place the balls on a tray lined with wax paper and chill until firm. When the balls are firm, they are ready for dipping into the milk chocolate. In a microwave-safe bowl melt 8 oz. of milk chocolate. When melted, dip the balls into the chocolate and place them on waxed paper to harden.
