Interesting Facts About Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are one of the top ten most popular nuts. Raw Brazil nuts are used in a variety of culinary ways. They can also be eaten alone as a healthy snack. Roasted Brazil nuts have the same nutritional benefits as those that have not been roasted. However, their nutty flavor is intensified.

The Brazil Nut Tree

The lifespan of a Brazil nut tree exceeds 500 years. It is one of the tallest species in the Amazon forest. The fruit of the tree is one of the top ten healthiest nuts. A mature tree can produce over 300 fruits. The fruit takes 14 months to mature and can weigh up to four pounds. Brazilian walnuts are sometimes referred to as the giant of the Amazon jungle. A Brazil nut pod weighs about 5 pounds and contains 10 to 25 seeds. When a Brazil nut pod falls from the tree it can travel at a speed of 50 miles an hour. Harverters use a machete to break open the nut pod. Botanically, what is referred to as a Brazil nut is actually a seed, not a nut.

Holiday Treats

It’s likely that the tradition of putting nuts in a Christmas stocking stems from the European tradition of scattering nuts during holiday events. At some point in history, the idea emerged that eating nuts at Christmas would bring good luck. Brazil nuts are among the 5 five best nuts to include as part of the holiday festivities. They are a popular stocking-stuffer and are frequently used in holiday table decor.
