For early settlers, drying apples was the only way to preserve them for an extensive amount of time. Their method of drying was simple and required about 2 weeks. Today, we have more drying options and quicker drying methods. Two things that haven’t changed are the popularity of using dried apples to make pie and the irresistible urge to chew on a dried apple ring.

When it comes to apple pie, there’s a multitude of different ways to make it. Other variations expand the ingredient list to include additional dried fruits such as raisins or cranberries. Over the years, a lot of apple pie toppings have been created. Those toppings range from rustic crumbles to intricate lattice toppings. There’s an almost endless number of apple pie recipes available. There’s also the option of creating your signature recipe that becomes a family tradition.
Some people call them fried apple pies while others call them apple hand pies. However, the best thing to call them is delicious. Dried apple wedges are piled high on a thin, round piece of dough. The dough is folded, the edges sealed, and then the pie is placed in hot oil to fry. The pie is turned over to brown it on both sides. When browned it’s time to remove it from the pan, cool, and devour.
Dried apple rings are a healthy alternative to sugary candy. These healthy, soft, chewy rings are delicious eaten alone as a snack. The rings can be used whole to make a baked apple pie or cut in half to make fried apple pies when apple wedges aren’t available.
