Raw pecans have a sweet, buttery, mildly earthy flavor. The versatility of pecans and pecan pieces make them a good pantry staple. Pecans can be eaten raw, toasted, or roasted. Pecan halves and pecan pieces can be used in sweet and savory dishes to enhance the flavor and boost the nutritional value of a dish.
When pecans are roasted they are cooked all the way through. Roasted pecans in oven develop a more intense flavor and a crispier texture. When you prepare roasted salted pecans at home, you can control how much salt is added to the pecans. Roasting pecans at home also gives you the opportunity to season them with whatever flavors or unique flavor combinations you desire.
To make roasted salted pecans, preheat the oven to 325 degrees. For 2 cups of raw pecan halves, you’ll need 3 Tbsp. of butter and about 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt. You can adjust the salt to taste. Put the pecan halves in a bowl. Pour melted butter over the pecans and toss until coated. Spread the butter-coated pecans on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake for approximately 15 minutes. Remove from oven and allow them to cool.
Raw pecans have a soft texture. Toasting them gives them a distinctive crunch and intensifies their nutty flavor. If you buy raw pecan halves in bulk, it’s best to toast them in small batches. To toast them, put pecans halves in a skillet over medium heat. Do not overcrowd the pan. You can add a small amount of butter or olive oil to the pan. This will add an additional layer of flavor to the pecans and make seasonings stick to the nuts better. Stir the pecans frequently to prevent burning. The pecans will turn a golden brown color in about 5 minutes. When they are golden, remove the pan from the heat and pour the nuts onto a plate to cool.
Seasoned roasted pecans are a delicious snack. They can be used as a dessert topping, added to vegetable dishes, and added to a cheeseboard. You can crush them and use them as a breading or coating. They are a fantastic addition to a snack mix or homemade granola.
