Culinary trends often come and go. But, some trends are so spectacular and immensely popular they linger on for an extended amount of time. Salted caramel was first promoted as a new food trend in 2008 and remains a popular flavor today.
There’s an almost endless number of flavors and foods that pair wonderfully with sea salt caramel. Salt caramel, chocolate and nuts can be combined to create an awesome brownie or muffin. Salt caramel, apples, and cinnamon can be combined to create a delicious dessert. Caramel flavor can enhance everything from ice cream to coffee. Use it in combination with herbs and spices, and fruits and vegetables.
You can take desserts to a higher level of flavor by drizzling caramel sauce over them. It only takes 4 ingredients to make basic salted caramel sauce. To make the sauce you’ll need 1 cup of pure cane granulated sugar, 6 tablespoons of salted butter, 1/2 cup of heavy cream (room temperature), and 1 teaspoon of sea salt.
To prepare the sauce, heat the sugar in a saucepan (don’t use a non-stick pan) over medium heat until it melts into a thick brown liquid. Stir constantly while melting the sugar. When the sugar is completely melted, carefully stir in the butter. After the caramelized sugar and butter are combined, cook for 1 minute without stirring. Then very slowly stir in the heavy cream. The mixture will bubble rapidly during this step. Once you’ve added 1/2 cup of cream stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil one more minute. After that minute, remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the salt. The sauce will thicken as it cools. It will keep for a month in the refrigerator. It will also solidify in the refrigerator. You can heat the sauce in the microwave to achieve the consistency you desire when you’re ready to use it.
