This nutritious nut, with its numerous health benefits, is available in a variety of forms with each type having distinctive textures and uses. Roasting almonds will intensify their flavor and give them a crispy texture.
Sliced almonds are the thinnest type of almonds. They can either be blanched or unblanched. They have a distinctive oblong shape. The thin slices are ideal for adding flavor, texture, and nutrition to ice cream, yogurt, and hot or cold cereal.
Slivered almonds are always blanched. They are cut into tiny strips that are thicker than sliced almonds. Slivers of almonds add flavor and texture to soups, salads, vegetable dishes, and homemade granola. Toasted slivered almonds have a more intense flavor that makes them a more noticeable ingredient.
The process for slivering almonds starts with blanching raw almonds. To blanch them, put the almonds in a heat-proof bowl. Pour boiling water over the almonds and let them soak for 3 minutes. Drain the almonds and let them cool. When cool, squeeze each almond between your thumb and index finger to remove the brown skin from the almond. Then, using a sharp knife, slice the almond lengthwise into strips.
The blanching process can cause almonds to become a little soft. Toasting them will restore their crunchiness. To make toasted slivered almonds, heat a dry, non-stick skillet to medium heat, add the slivers in a single layer, swirl them around in the pan until they become a golden color.
To make roasted sliced almonds, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a single layer of almond slices on a baking sheet. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 3 minutes. Remove the pan, shake it, and return it to the oven. Check the almond slices every minute until they achieve a golden color.
