If the image that pops into your mind when you hear the word licorice is those long strings or ropes of candy you ate as a child, you’re in for a surprise when you become acquainted with Australian Licorice. You probably remember those licorice strings as being basically flavorless and pretty tough. Australian-style licorice far exceeds those strings in flavor and in various other ways.
Australian-style licorice is not sold in string form. It is typically sold in bite-size pieces. The pieces are soft and have a ribbed texture. They have a slight curve to their shape. These bite-size pieces are thick and chunky. They are not hollow inside but are solid pieces of candy. When you bite into one of these chewy pieces you are treated to a fantstic flavorful experience.
If you have tried those strings of licorice and didn’t find them to be very flavorful or you were not impressed with what flavor they did have, you will most likely have a different opinion of the Australian version of licorice candy. Those bite-sized chunks can satisfy a craving for a sweet treat. However, they are not overwhelmingly sweet. If black licorice is not one of your favorite treats, you might quickly become smitten with Australian Red Licorice. These chewy, bite-sized pieces have a delightful strawberry flavor. You get a little bit of sweetness mixed with some exciting tanginess with this unique candy.
Without a doubt, the best way to enjoy Australian-style licorice is to slowly chew one piece at a time and savor the flavor. However, if you are looking for an excuse to enjoy this delicious candy other than as a snack there are some ways to do that. You can chop up the bite-sized pieces into smaller pieces and sprinkle them over ice cream, frozen yogurt or pudding. Licorice pairs really well with strawberry ice cream, raspberry sherbet and lemon frozen yogurt.
