Hazelnuts are among the five most popular nuts in the world. Mahogany-colored, uniquely-shaped Hazelnuts can be eaten raw or roasted. Whole blanched Hazelnuts are frequently used in sweet and savory dishes. It is necessary to blanch hazelnuts to remove their bitter skin before using them in a culinary manner. Raw blanched hazelnuts add a smooth creaminess to baked goods.
Blanched Filberts and blanched Hazelnuts are terms that can be used interchangeably. When comparing the nutritional value of blanched and unblanched Hazelnuts, there are some slight differences. Raw hazelnuts have more protein, Omega 6, Thiamine, Folate, copper, and iron than those that have undergone the blanching process. Raw blanched Hazelnuts have more vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium, selenium, and manganese than unblanched Hazelnuts. When comparing calories, fat, energy, carbohydrates, and fiber the percentages are basically the same.
You can purchase blanched hazelnuts or buy raw hazelnuts and blanch them at home. Blanched roasted hazelnuts are a popular, healthy, and nutritious snack. When prepared and stored properly, blanched filberts or whole blanched Hazelnuts can be stored for up to 3 months. However, if you’re blanching the nuts at home, you may prefer to prepare them in portion sizes that correspond to the amount needed in the recipe you’re using. The blanching process is simple but removing the skins can be time-consuming. To blanch 1 cup of Hazelnuts, you’ll need to bring 3 cups of water to a boil. When the water begins to boil, add 4 tablespoons of baking soda to the water then carefully add the Hazelnuts. Reduce the heat if the water begins to boil over. Boil the nuts for 3 to 4 minutes. Drain the water off of the nuts, then pour cool water over them. Drain once more and remove the skins.
Blanched roasted hazelnuts can be prepared on the stovetop or in the oven. The oven method requires about 15 minutes. The stovetop method requires 5 to 10 minutes. It’s essential to monitor cooking time to prevent the nuts from burning.
