Why are Pumpkin Seeds Called Pepitas?

Pumpkin seeds and pepitas seeds are not the same things. Perhaps one reason people often refer to raw pumpkin seeds as pepitas is that they do have some similarities. However, those similarities do not make them 100% interchangeable.
Raw pumpkin seeds are ivory in color and have a fibrous shell while pepitas are green and do not have a shell. The word pepitas mean “little seed of squash” in Spanish. Pepitas are the seed of specific varieties of pumpkins. These hulless seeds are found only in Styrian and oilseed pumpkins. Pepitas are often eaten raw whereas many people prefer raw pumpkin seeds to be roasted before eating them. The absence of a shell, their slight crunchiness, and their pleasant nutty flavor make them very palate-pleasing. One distinguishing difference between pepitas seeds and pumpkin seeds is that pumpkin seeds with a shell contain twice as much fiber as pepitas.
Both roasted pepitas and roasted pumpkin seeds are popular snack items. They are also tasty ingredients to add to a variety of dishes to boost the nutritional value of the dish. Both seeds are a good source of vitamins and nutrients that can help boost immunity, heal wounds, promote sleep, support heart health, and reduce stress.
The roasting process is for these seeds is basically the same and the finished product is nutty and delicious. To roast 2 cups of pepitas, you’ll need a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, pepitas, 2 tsp. olive oil, and 1 tsp. sea salt. Stir the pepitas and oil together until the seeds are coated. Add salt. Stir. Place a single layer of seeds on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll need to shake the pan about halfway through the roasting process. Remove from the oven, cool completely, and store in a jar for up to 2 weeks.
